Spring 2002

I hope you will enjoy Battle Royale, which I am screening
at 7PM, Wednesday, April 17, 2002 in Thimann 3. Note this is a change of
location.  I will also be discussing the film and its contexts in
your class meeting on Thursday, April 18 2002. You are also welcome to
stay after the screening for our informal discussions, but you not obligated
to.

So that we might have a common context with which to
begin, I would like you to read two very short, painless texts that are
on the Internet. I have Created hyperlinks to them below. They are the
uppermost two titles in the list below. The first is a brief overview of
Director Fukasaku Kinji’s career. The second item is a recent interview
[in English] with Fukasaku in which he explains what Battle
Royale
meant to him.

After Battle Royale, you might need
a friendlier film about Japanese Youth. I recommend the West Coast Premier
of
Water Boys (Yaguchi
Shinobu 2001) 7pm Friday, April 19, Thimann 3.

It’s the heartwarming saga of a true story of a boy’s
highschool synchronized swim team.
