Be sure to bookmark this site. It is the site of Professor S Marc Cohen’s
course at the University of Washington. He has generously posted a rich
panoply of lecture/lectures notes arranged better than many commercial
textbooks on similar subjects. And his real passion for the material ripples
through his expositions and adds conviction to the illumination they provide.

Plato

D. Anthony Storm’s Web
Site on Plato

Professor Anthony Storm’s thoughtful and resonate site. A compendium
of commentaries on Plato’s dialogues, arranged according to the traditional
order. Exquisitely laid out, each commentary page on a given dialogue is
linked to the English Translation text and Greek text from the Perseus
Project
.

4th Tetrology: Exploring
Plato’s Middle Dialogues

Professor Anthony F. Beavers and the people involved
in the Evansville University classics program have woven wonderful webs
together about Ancient Greece, and especially about Plato. This is Professor
Beavers‘ site, organized around an alternative theory of grouping Plato’s
dialogues.
Plato and His Dialogues
Bernard Suzanne’s Plato site, also part of the Evansville group, includes
extensive contextualization of Plato’s thought and suggestive discussion
of the dialogues and their interpretation (in English and French). Both
Professor Beavers’s and Professor Suzanne’s sites are connected with a
Plato discussion group open to anyone seriously interested in „really reading“
Plato. See the site for details.
Plato lectures
from S.Marc Cohen
These lectures are part of Professor Cohen’s „History of Philosophy“ course
at the University of Washington. The materials here are invaluable. We’ll
see more of Professor Cohen’s generosity soon.
Plato’s Academy.
Chrisopher S. Planeau’s overview of what Plato’s academy was. It gives
an evocative picture of the grounds, the life led within, and the teaching
and inquiry that radiated from it (all the way to these very electronics
on this quasi-noetic, intangible but „really real“ page! This site is part
of his larger site on Ancient Athens

The Presocratics

The Presocratics
Well organized jumping off point (pace Empedocles) for the study of the
presocratic thought and thinkers.
The Presocratics
For Greek readers.
Parmenides
Allan Randall’s informative and evocative site on Parmenides, who will
be presenting us problems via Plato by the time we read the Sophist, but
hopefully before that too.
Zeno of Kitium
Twenty-five bonus points for anyone looking at this item who shouted:“What’s
Zeno of Kitium doing under the „presocratics“? That was Zeno of Elea. The
Z of K belongs under the Hellenic Philosophers!“ And there they are, waiting
to applaud you
too.

Hellenic Philosophy

Stoics
on the Web
The stoic grammarians along with Bhartrhari, Panini, and Charles
S. Peirce
, are the language thinkers I most obsess about. I doubt that
that amounts so much to a recommendation as it does a confession, but if
you read about the Stoics theory of language and their contributions to
the philosophy of grammar – not to mention the introduction into Western
European grammar the distinction between a noun and an adjective – you
might become a stoics fan too. There are worse fates. And the stoics will
never demand a bigger stadium.
